DS Smith solid board network

70% of purchasing decisions are made at the point-of-sale, therefore catching the customer’s attention here is crucial. Packaging obviously plays a strong role in customer decision making. In the pharmaceutical market which deals with people’s health, packaging needs to fulfill some specific criteria, but there is still huge space for creativity and customer engagement.

With the rise of the generics market comes the pressure for intensifying advertising efforts in order to maintain sales. In the US alone, the biggest producer of branded drugs increased its advertising spending by 6% in 2016. Fighting back against the loss of patents, this trend will continue and intensify with further pricing pressures. Self –medication and over-the-counter products are equally on the rise, which underlines the need for catchy, attractive packaging to increase brand visibility.

DS Smith has a strong expertise in solid board production, with specialists of solid board in the UK, France, Spain and Slovenia. This network can serve a large geographic area.

Rakek, a Slovenian plant specialized in pharmaceutical packaging

The Rakek plant, bought in 2015 by DS Smith, brought a thorough expertise in one specific category- solid board pharmaceutical packaging. It specializes in offset printed cardboard and laminated packaging.

Rakek has a dedicated pharma production space since 2010. They invested in special laboratory and equipment to meet the strict quality standards expected by customers. To achieve higher quality demands, they also use Pixel Proof automatic system. This tool is used to compare the layout of the product at several stages with the original customer’s file and determine possible inconsistency. It also checks the relevance of positioning and the height of braille dots.

When manufacturing pharma packaging, precision is key. Specifications are strictly followed as appropriate state authorities of countries where the medicine is sold must confirm the product, including the packaging. Any change must be made via a certification process. There are critical points where mistakes are not allowed (errors in text or mixing different packaging leaflets), as a critical error can result in a loss of business or even an impact on patients.

General requirements for packaging are represented with 3 pillars:

  • Quality - each item must match, not just the average value
  • Safety - an extreme emphasis on everything that is crucial to the patient. Required supplier’s statements of compliance throughout the whole supply chain and additional GMP assessment.
  • Regulatory compliance - for the pharmaceutical industry, the registration of a medicinal product is a crucial one, the producer concludes a contract with the country and only a completely coherent product and documentation can be placed on the market.

Rakek plant has proper certificates ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and FSC Mix and work with the biggest players on the market. That means also regular audits from costumers’ side.

DS Smith Neath

We have achieved another important milestone – first DS Smith site, Neath, located in South Wales, UK, has been awarded the PS 9000 pharmaceutical accreditation.  The accreditation validates the Neath site to produce printed cartons for the pharmaceutical sector.

PS 9000 is a global certification developed by the Pharmaceutical Quality Group (PQG) for the pharmaceutical packaging supply industry, and it defines specific requirements and guidance for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in conjunction with implementation of the appropriate quality and monitoring systems, including full reporting and traceability.

“Having been an accredited BRC supplier for over ten years, our GMP standards are extremely high, which enabled us to have a smooth transition to PS9000” Comments Lyndon Powell, DS Smith Neath General Manager. “The PS9000 accreditation confirms the sites continuous improvement culture and should  provide reassurance to  prospective and existing customers that the site is manufacturing  to the highest possible standards.”

DS Smith Neath already supplies cartons to the food, drink and nutritional sectors. The implementation of this accreditation will now enable the site to offer its extensive range of packaging solutions to the pharmaceutical sector.
