Optimised packaging for dialysis bags

More reliable solution with centring devices.

Challenge: Secure transport of vital medical supplies

A medical laboratory was seeking to optimise its transport packaging for worldwide consignmentsof dialysis bags. The existing packaging in use was functional, but there was room for improvement.

Our approach: Optimise the packaging design and introduce automated technology

The existing packaging used was of a standard design (American box), which the customer liked and was functional. DS Smith knew that we could retain the design, but also enhance it in one particular area: stacking.

So, we facilitated more reliable column stacking of packaging onpallets, with the use of a three-piece reinforced packaging solution with centring devices. We also introduced DS Smith automated machinery to speed up the process, using mandrel forming technology (MFT). This meant the weight of the packaging could be reduced, another benefit.

Results: Reduced packaging weight and perfect pallet stability

  • Reduction in packaging weight by 27%
  • Perfect pallet stability even with column stacking
  • Perfect squaring of packaging so greater efficiency of packing lines
  • Reliable protection due to internal box reinforcement
