Spotlight on sustainability

Our vision is to lead the way in sustainable packaging solutions.

At DS Smith we are building a better business, focused on delivering sustainable value to all of our stakeholders. To us, truly sustainable value is found when balancing the needs of Our Business, Our Environment and Our People;

  • Our Business  - Creating shared value through responsible recycling, paper and packaging.
  • Our Environment - Minimising our impact, from design to production and supply to recycling.
  • Our People - Ensuring the safety, well-being and development of colleagues and contributing to our communities.

Packaging is the ultimate guarantee that the carbon footprint of a customer’s product is not wasted through damage or spoilage. Huge amounts of energy, water, raw materials and resources are invested in a chocolate bar, a television or the fruit and vegetables that we eat.

Effective packaging safeguards products and food and all the resources invested in them, it protects products and minimises food waste and can be used to make the supply chain more sustainable.

Packaging is not always done in the right way, with examples of oversized packaging and confusing messages around recyclability. What is sometimes lost is the vital relationship between packaging and the product.

DS Smith has invested significantly to ensure we are able to provide the right packaging for our customers, simultaneously adding value through increased brand impact, ensuring functionality to reflect changing consumer lifestyles and retail trends, and working with our customers using our packaging to make their own supply chains more sustainable.

  • On average, roughly 88% of the fibre used in corrugated packaging in Europe comes from recycled sources
  • Over 90% of the virgin fibres used in the industry come certified sustainable sources
  • Timber fibres can be recycled up to 7 times, embracing the principles of the circular economy
  • The right packaging can set off a domino effect of sustainable supply chain efficiencies, reducing pallet loads and warehousing space, taking lorries of the road, protecting products and minimising food waste.
