DS Smith Packaging Systems achieves a major milestone in sustainable automation

As global demand for automated and efficient packaging lines accelerates, DS Smith Packaging Systems has launched a new generation of high-speed mandrel case forming and sealing machines. This innovation represents a strategic leap forward in our end-of-line packaging solutions portfolio.

Why this evolution?

Markets are changing fast: higher production volumes, increased automation needs, and sustainability requirements. Our next-generation machines deliver significantly higher throughput while maintaining precision, reliability, and safety.

  • Previous generation: up to 60 cases/min (forming) and 55 cases/min (sealing)
  • New generation: up to 70 cases/min (+16%) and 120 cases/min (+218%)

Key drivers behind this development:

  • Rising customer demand for high-volume automated lines
  • Technological readiness (servo motion control, advanced mechanical design)
  • Strategic need to strengthen differentiation and competitiveness

Value creation and strategic impact

This project goes beyond technical improvement: it is a strategic lever for sustainable growth and profitability.

  • Controlled investment: Developed using internal R&D resources, within planned timelines and budgets.
  • Strong market potential: Early feedback is highly positive, especially from multinational clients seeking large-scale automation.
  • Profitability boost: Expected to accelerate ROI and improve margins thanks to high-speed capabilities.
  • Competitive advantage: Reinforces our leadership in end-of-line packaging solutions with strong differentiation.

In short, this innovation helps customers increase productivity, reduce operational costs, and achieve sustainable growth in a demanding market environment.

Commitment to sustainability

Beyond performance, these machines reflect our circular economy approach:

  • 92% recyclability and reuse
  • Short supply chain (200 km)
  • Future-proof concepts for the next 30 years

Next step: commercial rollout

Following successful factory acceptance tests in early August, we are entering the deployment phase. One forming machine has already been delivered to the customer in the US, and the other sealing machine is undergoing dry runs at the Systems factory. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable value creation for clients worldwide.
