DS Smith breaks new ground with coffee cup recycling

Our Coffee Cup Drop Boxes are now on sale, and they could recycle millions more coffee cups every year.

Coffee Cups Recycling

We have made significant progress in helping to solve the coffee cup recycling challenge with the launch of our Coffee Cup Drop Box.

Now it’s your chance to be part of an exciting new development that could recycle hundreds of millions of coffee cups every year.

Made from 100% recycled materials, our Coffee Cup Drop Boxes can hold up to 700 used cups, and once full, we will collect the boxes in conjunction with Royal Mail Relay and take it to our paper mill for recycling.

This sustainable solution is available to businesses of all types and sizes across the UK. Whether you are a retailer, factory, office, in fact anywhere where coffee lovers gather, take a look at our Coffee Cup Drop Boxes which are now available to buy online through DS Smith’s ePack shop.

Following the success of our Coffee Cup Drop Boxes in the UK, we are now trialling a similar scheme in the Netherlands through our De Hoop Paper Mill.

Drop boxes retail at £15 each, which includes cost of delivery and collection when full. There is a minimum order of six boxes and a minimum collection of two boxes.

Our campaign for coffee cups recycling

The recyclability of paper coffee cups is regularly in the headlines, with demands for better recycling firmly on the agendas of governments, organisations and consumers. DS Smith went about to tackle the challenge.

In 2018, after a series of trials we announced that our paper mill in Kent has the capacity to recycle up to 2.5 billion coffee cups each year – the challenge was then on to put in place a collection infrastructure to make sure coffee cups could be collected for recycling.

We worked with the coffee cup supply chain, policymakers, the recycling industry, and coffee lovers across the UK to build a sustainable, long-term recycling solution.

Now, after further successful trials with key partners around collection methods, we have launched our coffee cup collection box.

To answer any questions about coffee cup recycling, as well as exploring the next steps needed to continue our long-term recycling solution, we’ve produced an infographic, press releases, a short animation, and an interview video.
