The Challenge

Manufacturer of scientific, academic and technical books, TJ International has set itself a series of recycling targets. Since 2012 it has achieved 99% recycling and the company’s ultimate goal is to have zero waste to landfill.

The Solution

Over the past few years TJ International has successfully recycled a number of materials as well as reduced, reused or eliminated waste sources. All waste is segregated throughout the factory and offices and materials collected for recycling include paper, cardboard, plastic, printing plates, scrap metal, cans and bottles, batteries, fluorescent tubes and pallets.

By working with DS Smith the company was able to obtain roofed skips to recycle paper, cardboard and plastic. As the skips were located on a windy site this helped eliminate problems with windblown paper. DS Smith also helped to improve signage on bins to maximise segregation and value by providing posters for each different type of paper.

The Benefits

By 2012 TJ International had recycled 960 tonnes of material, down from 1,153 tonnes in 2008 and sent 12 tonnes to landfill, down from 24 tonnes in 2008. These figures successfully demonstrate the company’s waste reduction ethos, helping to eliminate waste in the first place.

Quote from Cat Brunyee, Systems Co-ordinator

“DS Smith’s help with the signage on paper bins has boosted the revenue we received from the material. Each poster has a description of the paper waste and its value. Staff can not only see which type of paper goes in which bin, but also the value to ensure the highest value possible is obtained and contamination is avoided. In 2012 we generated £30,000 from recycling paper and cardboard alone.”
