Towards Plastic-Free Packaging for Small Home Appliances
DS Smith, the leading provider of cardboard packaging, and BSH Hišni aparati d.o.o. Nazarje, a Slovenian company that is part of the BSH Home Appliances Group, have joined forces and developed an expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) free inserts packaging solution for Bosch hand mixers.
BSH Nazarje having well-defined sustainability objectives, has taken a significant stride towards more sustainable practices. The company's goals encompass reducing CO₂ emissions, utilizing sustainable materials, and minimizing the use of plastic in packaging.
In line with customers’ needs and objectives, this DS Smith innovative packaging solution, completely replacing the protective inserts made of polystyrene (expanded polystyrene - EPS) with corrugated cardboard alternatives.
BSH Nazarje produces up to 170,000 blenders annually, with each requiring two EPS inserts for their packaging and our new solution is anticipated to eliminate up to 340,000 pieces of EPS packaging annually. This move not only reduces waste, but also promotes the use of recyclable materials, ensuring a closed-loop approach without compromising product protection and safety.
In addition, DS Smith’s packaging solution is intended to provide protection for three different hand mixer models. The innovation also enables BSH Nazarje to achieve a faster packing time on the production line with flexibility for customer orders and optimum efficiency.
This hand mixers packaging also stands out in terms of functionality. It is designed to maintain all key requirements for transport and durability, which is very important in the small household appliance industry. It also allows for easy integration into the production or packaging process, as it does not require any changes to BSH packaging lines.
Sustainability is more than just a goal for us, it is our direction for the future. That is why we need partners who understand the complexity of our business and are able to think strategically and innovatively at the same time.
