DS Smith developed the optimal manufacturing process for its patented edrizzi® Vario paint mist separator: cardboard boxes with a complex interior that revolutionised the paint industry back in 2003.
The Vario boxes are the central component of the sophisticated, modular edrizzi® dry separation system. The paint mist separators are made of 100% corrugated cardboard. To make economical use of logistics and storage capacities, they are delivered flat and disassembled. Assembly is quick and intuitive. These paint mist separators have been continuously developed since 2003 and new types have been added. This is always done in coordination with the production department at DS Smith.

The boxes collect the paint mist or overspray – i.e. the paint particles that are sprayed past the object being painted. edrizzi® Vario boxes have pioneered dry separation in the painting industry. In the past, paint mist was collected using complex wet washing processes that were energy-intensive and produced a lot of odour, waste and noise. The switch from wet to dry coating increases the cost-effectiveness of painting systems many times over, enhances the sustainability of the painting process and also improves ergonomics.
The patented edrizzi® dry mist separator System consists of two flexibly combinable stages: paint mist separation with edrizzi® Vario cardboard boxes and at least one matching edrizzi® post-filter stage. These two components are connected to each other by a sheet steel construction in a modular system. Only by using the original system components can the system achieve its revolutionary absorption capacity of up to 97% of overspray.
edrizzi® Vario paint mist separators are available in numerous types. In general, the outer boxes with the same front dimensions differ in their depth, which varies between 300 mm and 500 mm. In most cases, the corrugated cardboard used is coated with flame-retardant paper on both the outside and inside, which ensures safety during operation. The difference in application is made by the inlays – differently constructed cardboard labyrinths that collect the paint mist inside the inconspicuous boxes.
