Tree planting for the next generation in Serbia
DS Smith Charitable Foundation funded planting of trees and flowers in local kindergartens in Kruševac, Serbia
Last year, DS Smith launched an ambitious new strategy called “Now and Next” which focuses on the sustainability challenges we are facing today, as well as those that will impact future generations. As a responsible neighbor who contributes to our communities, DS Smith has set a goal of launching 100 biodiversity projects across Europe and North America by 2025.
As part of the project to increase biodiversity, seedlings were donated to the Preschool organization “Nata Veljković“in Kruševac by DS Smith Charitable Foundation.
Mostly native species were selected for this project. When choosing, great attention was taken to be sure that the seedlings or their fruits do not cause allergic reactions and endanger the health and safety of the 1 to 6 years old children.
This project aims to:
- Improving air quality within the area where trees are planted - trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen
- Lowering the temperature in the summer months - trees reduce temperatures through shade and water evaporation
- Providing habitat to various entomological communities of insects as well as birds or mammals.
- Increase the number of flowers and benefits to pollinators
- Education of children - Children participated in planting and maintaining plants, developing environmental awareness from an early age, and making them understand the impact of today's actions on the future
