DS Smith Plastics, Extruded Products Runner Up on EPSE Awards 2019 for Innovation
EPSE Awards is a competition amongst European Polycarbonate Sheet Extruders aimed to promote the unique and energy efficient properties of polycarbonate sheets used in the construction sector. DS Smith Plastics, Extruded Products submitted this year’s project of a new fire station in Cernay, France, and was runner up on the Innovation Category.
The Cernay’s Fire Station located in the North-Eastern region of France chose Akyver© polycarbonate solution for the facade of the station to limit the amount of sun reflecting off the complex. To achieve this requirement, an innovative anti-glare treatment with a thermoregulator device was added to the station’s facade polycarbonate panels. This treatment provides visual comfort in the exterior and interior of the building and, due to infrared rays filtering, provides as well comfortable interior temperatures during the summer months. The first heatwave in the summer of 2018 demonstrated the effectiveness of the treated panels and the device.
Esthetically, Akyver© polycarbonate facades fit perfectly with the building's architecture. The 10 meters high panels offer as well as a lot of light inside the building, making the interior very bright.
At night, the polycarbonate facade lights up at every firefighters' intervention, and lights the fire station beautifully in the dark. Finally, the shape of the facade facilitates the efficient circulation of fire engines at any time inside the building.
All these properties and details has made the Cernay Fire Station energy efficient and unique in class.
The station’s vehicle hangar was designed to achieve energy independence and thermal comfort during all seasons thanks to the polycarbonate facades and thermoregulator device. This hangar is mainly heated passively by the south façade during winter season and provides an automatic temperature control based on natural ventilation, with polycarbonate skylights during summer season.
