HOTBIN Composting Featured in RHS and BBC Garden Feature at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chatsworth Flower Show
DS Smith Plastics’ award winning HOTBIN Composter was featured at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in England with an expected attendance in excess of 90,000 Flower Show enthusiasts.
Show gardens and products play a key part at nearly every RHS flower show aiming to inspire enthusiastic visitors with their own outdoor spaces. This year, DS Smith Plastics Foam Products was delighted to be a contributor featuring their award-winning HOTBIN Composter in the RHS and BBC Gardeners Question Time Garden Feature entitled the “Bloomin’ Healthy Garden”. Designed by Stephen Hall, it replicates a typical Derbyshire country garden and was designed to inspire and promote good garden health and illustrate the steps all gardeners can take to tackle the risk of pests and diseases on UK flora.
Split into different gardening sections, the walk-through garden included soundbites of advice from the BBC Gardeners Question Time team. DS Smith Plastics’ HOTBIN was featured in the composting area of the garden illustrating the importance of home composting and how bacteria, microorganisms and worms can be beneficial for maintaining healthy soil.
Manufactured from expanded polypropylene (EPP), the HOTBIN can hot compost by insulating heat generated naturally by bacteria to create a super-hot (40-60°c) environment inside the unit. Waste such as diseased plants, weeds, seeds and cooked food can all be added to the unit. This finished compost can then be used to promote microbial diversity and keep diseases at bay whilst mulch will help retain moisture in the soil, control fungal spores and suppress weeds. Being part of the “Bloomin’ Healthy Garden” illustrated the important role the HOTBIN composter plays in keeping a garden healthy.
