DS Smith Extruded Products Designs Custom Returnable Packaging for Montibello
Montibello is a Spanish family business founded in Barcelona in 1967 that manufactures and distributes professional cosmetic products. They have a team of more than 260 people with an advanced laboratory with 22 professionals completely dedicated to research and innovation in the cosmetic sector. Their lab needed trays with dividers to protect their cosmetic jars when being sent to printing.
Montibello produces glass jars for their cosmetic cream and needed protective and returnable packaging. They approached DS Smith Plastics, Extruded Products in Alcala de Henares, Spain to design a tray that would exceed their hygienic and technological standards. Plastics’ Extruded Products polypropylene returnable trays would replace the current packaging Montibello uses due to its high contamination rate and waste levels.
Extruded Products custom designed trays that open from one side and has internal dividers for the jars. Adapting the design to the customer’s needs resulted in a tray that opens from one side to enable quick and simple extraction of the jars inside. By using corrugated plastic dividers and fittings that are made from polypropylene sheets, the trays and dividers can secure and protect the fragile jars.
Two versions of the packaging were presented; one row that fits 20 jars and two rows that fit 40. Montibello decided to utilize the packaging with one row. Montibello will place two orders of 10,000 trays with dividers each a year. The custom designed trays are designed to be efficiently used in continuous cycles without losing their integrity or quality. They are suitable for returnable packaging and at the end of its useful life; the trays can be recycled into a new product.
