Three ScanStar wins for DS Smith

DS Smith teams in Denmark, Sweden and Finland have collected three awards at the latest ScanStar, with Finland scoring for the third consecutive year!

Out of the 29 submissions from the Nordic countries, three DS Smith packaging designs have been awarded. The jury granted “Special Sustainable Packaging” to DS Smith Denmark’s Arla Unika corrugated e-commerce packaging, which keeps the products cool during transport and replaces the EPS packaging previously used. The e-commerce packaging design was described as a charming, elegant and sustainable solution for food that requires cold conditions during the transport. The cardboard packaging contains insulating material to keep the cool which is also fibre-based. Easy to open, the greeting card on the inner cover delights the end user’s unboxing experience.

Additionally,  from Finland, DS Smith Christmas calendar filled with liquorice was awarded for its beautiful design and its plastic-free structure, even for the smallest inserts. The jury voted for DS Smith Christmas calendar because of its unique sustainable design. Being that the calendar is made entirely of cardboard, it is extremely easy to dispose for cardboard collection. An ingenious and sturdy indoor solution that can also offer further use in children's play.

Finally, from Sweden, the DS Smith Coffin, the alternative to a traditional coffin made from recycled cardboard, was awarded and arose emotions amongst the jury. The panel selected this solution for its innovative design and compliant structure from both an environmental and an economic point of view.

The award ceremony for ScanStar winners will be held on October 28th as a highlight of the annual PackSummit event. Due to the constraints brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s event will be organized online.

All the packaging solutions that have been awarded a ScanStar fulfil the eligibility criteria of WorldStar competition. Therefore the three DS Smith solutions will be brought forward to the worldwide competition organized by the World Packaging Organization WPO.
