DS Smith Plastics, Rapak and Almarai Bag-in-Box Journey in the Middle East

Since 2006 DS Smith Plastics, Rapak has been a reliable partner of Almarai, the world’s largest vertically integrated dairy company and the biggest food and beverage manufacturing and distribution company in the Middle East. Now, 12 years later, both companies look back and recall why Bag-in-Box was selected as the ideal intermediate packaging for this region and look towards new opportunities.

Almarai is a dairy manufacturing company from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Establishing a dairy farm in the middle of the desert requires extra attention to every detail, and the mission of Almarai, “Quality you can trust”, has brought them to success. Through years of experience, the company has transformed from a local dairy producer to a diversified regional giant.

The challenge

This growth has marked the need for a reliable internal packaging format to be used for quality assurance, testing and new product development of dairy products. It had to ensure product safety and freshness in transit to Almarai´s research and development facilities and during the trials.

Our solution

Rapak’s Bag-in-Box was a perfect option for Almarai since it offered maximum product protection and an extended shelf life for dairy of up to 10 days after opening. A wide range of sizes – from 1.5 liter to 1400 liter intermediate bulk containers – was another benefit in favor of this packaging format.

The Rapak team studied customer requirements and suggested its patented Intasept® technology as the ideal system for the extreme weather conditions that are common to the Middle East. Intasept is the only aseptic filling system for flexible bags in the market that offers the security of heat-sealed closure before and after filling. The double membrane protection on Intasept bags ensures maximum safety for ambient dairy and for added active ingredients such as Omega 3, vitamins and minerals.

Rapak also designed a custom Intasept filling machine and special 10 liter, 20 liter and 1100 liter irradiated bags with fitments for enhanced product safety.

The results

Reliability of Rapak bags has been the key to success for a long-lasting relationship between Rapak and Almarai. The dairy company highly appreciates the benefits of Bag-in-Box that has become the main intermediate format for several products such as feta cheese and camel milk. Both companies are convinced that Bag-in-Box applications will keep growing as Almarai is constantly looking for innovation and launching new products to satisfy its customers.
