Unboxed Festival receives a boost thanks to support from DS Smith

This year’s graduates from UAL: MA Applied Imagination in the Creative Industries course, showcased their work as part of an Unboxed Festival, curated and organised by Gian Carlo de Jesus and Konstantina Katsikari.

Sponsored by DS Smith, the packaging specialist has provided 200 boxes for use by the students to unbox their creations. The two-day event was held on 4 and 5 December 2019 at The Street, University of Arts, London.

The students were joined by VIPs on the opening day, including friends, family, industry partners and colleagues. Together they experienced an exciting programme led by the students, which also included talks by leading professionals, such as Shanice Mears, co-founder of The Elephant Room and one of Management Today’s '35 under 35.

The following day saw the event open its’ doors to members of the public where students showcased their work through boxes.  This act of unboxing processes and concepts by graduating students gave this year’s festival its name, pertaining a student’s ‘state of mind’ after the one-year journey on this unique course.

UNBOXED also signifies a moment in time when project outcomes are 'revealed' to the world for the very first time.  Visitors could also embrace the opportunity to learn more about students’ work and join an interactive workshop about how to apply your imagination.

The boxes, produced by DS Smith, in support of this imaginative event visibly dominated the entry space and were arranged to look like installations. Students used the boxes to present their processes, outcomes, and concepts, resembling street artists who interacted and immersed with the visitors.
