Bacs, bespoke plastic trays

With this post we pay tribute to a line of reusable packaging which has been a revolution in our history as a company, they are the "Bacs" or "reusable trays support," the first major incursion that made Tecnicarton in the world of tailored reusable packaging.

What is a Bac?

The automotive sector call Bac, to a type of handling tray made of plastic and completely custom designed. The main feature of these reusable packaging is that investment in expensive molds is not necessary for their manufacture, since the injection technique is not used.

They are very light and very robust packaging. They usually go for the transport of small parts that require a high level of protection. This type of packaging is shaped like a tray and is conditioned with different internal elements to protect and position the parts.

How are these handling packages?

The Bacs, whether they are rigid as if they are foldable have four elements that distinguish them from injected packaging:

Body. PP plate made in different weights, thicknesses and colors, depending on the design requirements. Manipulating the PP plate to convert it into packaging is made by applying different techniques of stamping and gluing: die cold, heat staking, ultrasonic bonding by heat, etc.

Edge profile. It is a profile also made of PP, that "embraces" the entire perimeter box manner thus giving exceptional resistance to all packaging. The unique design of this profile makes these packages stackable.

Internal fittings. Bacs can be fitted with different types of protection and positioning elements according to the design requirements: rigid PP positioners, flexible spacers, foam cushioning, etc.

Accessories. As being handling packaging various accessories such as handles (open, closed ...), label holders (flexible, rigid ...) that personalize the packaging and make it ideal for integration within programs read and user ergonomics are needed.

Design possibilities of Bacs

Earlier we mentioned that the structure of plate + profile of these packaging removed the need for a mold, well, we should add that also this structure allows a very wide range of designs regarding:

  • Dimensions, either long, wide or high qualities
  • PP board, in terms of weights, thicknesses and colors
  • Types of PP plate, extruded, laminated with coatings
  • Accessories, handling and identification of packaging: label holders, RFID tags, handles, etc.

Internal fittings, with different materials and technologies according to requirements: foam cushioning, flexible dividers, thermoformed trays, etc.

By avoiding the use of molds we not only eliminate the initial investment but also we made the production more flexible so that the minimum production lots are very small.

Who uses these handling trays?

It is a purely industrial packaging and has many applications: from movements intra plants that require little return flows (<50kms) to customer-supplier return movements with distances of up to 2,000 kms.

industrial sectors such as: automotive components, aerospace, metalworking ... use these packaging in its supply chain, due to its advantages in cost and design flexibility.
