Tailor made packaging for a unique product!

Käsityöläispanimo Pyynikki, in Tampere, Finland is a small brewery which has won numerous international awards for its products. The brewery has a large selection of unique beers and they manufacture products with love.

Challenge:

With Halloween approaching the brewery needed something special to commemorate the ‘mortal remains’ of their Post Mortem Imperial Stout beer. The packaging needed to be sustainable but also reflect the unique character of the product and support sales.

A unique beer deserves a unique package which supports sales of the product but also provides safe and secure transport protection. Collaboration between DS Smith and the customer resulted in a truly unique and somewhat macabre miniature coffin package just the right size to fit a beer bottle. Each package was printed with a unique number, so when the consumer received the artisanal beer, he also got a unique package. The coffin packaging proved to be an instant hit and became a phenomenon. Not only was it instantly recognisable on pub shelves but it sold out in record time.

Result:

  • More sales thanks to a unique and instantly identifiable packaging
  • Great brand building thanks to a commemorative packaging that consumers could keep
  • Good sustainability as the packaging is completely and easily recyclable
  • Managed risk ensuring that the precious beer bottles were safely protected in their little coffins
  • Individually numbered packs allowed collectors to have a unique package with excellent beer and enabled the brewery to build an even closer bond with customers.
