DS Smith boxes have many uses!

DS Smith was recently contacted by a school in Leopoldsburg (Belgium) to donate cardboard boxes and help out with a school event.

This event called Fiesta Mundial was coordinated by Kris Boets who took the 100 students from the fifth and sixth grades and gave them the opportunity to sleep in the cardboard boxes on the schoolyard to experience the way other children must sleep in poorer parts of the world.

DS Smith became involved by supplying the boxes that were produced and partly sponsored by DS Smith Tilburg. The event was in conjunction with the of NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) Caraes group and DS Smith donated 150 boxes to help with the experience.

This year their campaign was called ¡Hola Amigos! and was raising funds to improve the means of the Centro Jesús Amigo, a centre in the city of Granada, Nicaragua. This centre provides shelter and education to children that live on the streets and in the slums of the city.

The day of the event included music and dance performances of the students along with a six hour cycle-marathon. Each class found sponsors to cycle a fixed trail to help raise funds and awareness. The winning class was given a buffet of different desserts and great fun was had by all involved. Other numerous activities, games and bake sales were also held to help raise funds along with some playing traditional games like piñatas.

“We succeeded in sensitizing our pupils about the situation in Granada, Nicaragua and at the same time we got them motivated to participate in a cycle-marathon and a multicultural market.” explains Kris Boets of Bovenbouw Sint-Michiel School. “We organised a complete day in which we combined fun, competition and fund raising to establish worldwide solidarity!”
