DS Smith supports corrugated board boat race

This year the Canoe-Club-Fulda celebrated its open day again. Numerous activities like Stand-Up-Paddeling and canoe-polo invited young and old to participate. One of the highlights was the corrugated cardboard boat race which took place on the river Fulda - sponsored by DS Smith l Packaging Division Germany & Switzerland.

Corrugated paper as far as the eye can see. Children and teenagers started at 10 am in the morning on the meadow of the Canoe-Club-Fulda to build their boats made out of corrugated cardboard. 16 teams did not miss the chance to plunge into the water with their self-made cardboard boats and at 2 pm in the afternoon, the event took place. Supported by the shouts of their fans, the boats were set into the 17 degrees cold water and they started in two groups. Not all boats crossed the finish line unscathed. However, those who could, fought till the end, and reached the finish just with cardboard parts, what amused the specators.

Also the apprentices of DS Smith l Packaging Division | Plant Fulda have assisted concerning construction and participated on the race, but unrivaled. ,,We had the advantage, that we already know the material very well and in the context of our training we learn how to design individual solutions from corrugated cardboard for every requirement", says Janik Witzel, trainee in packaging technology at DS Smith l Packaging Division | Plant Fulda.

Focusing on sustainability, paper tape has been used again to allow professional disposed after the race. This way, the boats could simply become recycled in the paper cycle after the race.

Besides fame and honor, the winners got attractive prices, which were also sponsored by DS Smith l Packaging Division l Plant Fulda.
