DS Smith won Scanstar 2012 award

DS Smith has recieved its first ever Scanstar award for a clever packaging solution

Since 1969 the Scandinavian Packaging Association has arranged the packaging competition Scanstar. The competition is open for all packaging designs that have been designed and produced in the Nordic countries and  this year DS Smith Packaging Finland won the price with its design for the “Turvakerroin Oma” - a personal alarm for consumers. The award is the first Scanstar ever for DS Smith!

The packaging and the transportation package for “Turvakerroin Oma” were designed in Design Centre in Finland by designers Jyrki Valkama and Ville Kinanen. Graphical designer Maarit Mäkinen has done the graphical design.

The client gave no specific guidelines on this project, so it was decided to make a simple and efficient solution. The packaging itself does not take much space and can be used in varied retail environments. The uncoated liner and minimal waste in the manufacturing process makes this packaging environmentally friendly.

A display was designed later to promote the product and it plays on the strengths of the packaging, being light-weight while offering maximum visibility. Equipped with a lid, the display also functions as a transport packaging.

”Scanstar is an excellent proof of the great work that our designers do. It shows that all those daily things we use are design as well, although we don´t think it! ” says Product Development Manager Jyri Weiste from DS Smith Packaging Finland.
