Hack the City – Brugge – April 11 – 15, 2016
Students at the Howest School of Architecture in Brugge are ‘Hacking the City’ this week. The five day event is part of an international series that looks to design an object (no larger than 15.5m3) and add it to a public space. Other participating cities include Rotterdam, Aarhus and Tel Aviv. In doing so it should give that space a new reason or purpose – not easy in a city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
The scope of the project is huge and the best results will showcase innovation, originality and respect for the surroundings. The objects will be built primarily from corrugated cardboard, wood or fabric but other materials are allowed.
DS Smith – Investing in New Ideas
DS Smith is proud to provide our Howest city hackers with enough corrugated cardboard to let their imaginations go wild. Investing in new ideas and the next generation is an important part of how we find a better way forward with our customers and with the world around us.
Longlist to Shortlist
The first two days of the competition are devoted to developing ideas and creating concepts. On the third day Wednesday April 13th, contestants present their scale model proposals to the judges to see who will have their creations built and be one of the finalists.
Mette Staal, a designer at More from Less, a DS Smith subsidiary, will be one of the Wednesday judges determining which of the 80+ participants make it into the final three proposals for judging on Friday.
Putting Ideas into Practice
On Thursday all 80+ participants will come together to build the full-sized versions of the three final entrants
…And the winner is…you can vote too!
Friday will see a winner crowned by judges in Brugge but we want to know what you think too. Do you agree or disagree with the judges?
You can vote by retweeting, sharing or hitting the ‘like’ button on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We’ll post photos of the three finalists with their scale models so you can decide which one you like best. And don’t forget to use the hashtags: #Howest , #DSSmith, #Hackthecity
