Sustainability Education

We are inspiring and educating our communities and future generations on sustainability and the role of the circular economy.

Living in a world where we adopt a take make waste mindset is no longer sustainable. It's time to take action, not only for businesses and organisations alike, but for society too. Sustainable development means meeting the needs of today without comprising the ability to meet the needs of the future.

"Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future."

- Unesco (2014)

Engaging people on the circular economy

It is important that everyone understands the actions they can take to make a difference locally. That’s why our ambition is to engage 10 million people on the circular economy by 2030 and extend circular economy education into our communities with the help of our people, resources and the Charitable Foundation.

To help achieve this, we developed our free circular economy lesson plan in 12 languages which was launched at COP26 in 2021.

Estela Ayudan, Quality and Environment Manager at DS Smith’s Mill in Alcolea, notes how the lesson plan allows for a different way of learning.

''I've delivered a few of these sessions now and the children really enjoy seeing practical examples of why recycling is important, how they can play a part and what difference they can make.' she said.

'I've also given sessions which have included my own children and even they were impressed, which is some praise!'
