Closed Loop Recycling
As Europe’s largest paper and cardboard recycler, and one of the leading full recycling and waste management companies, you can trust us to find a way to make 100% of the resources you send us into something useful once more.
What is Closed-Loop Recycling?
Closed-loop recycling is a process where waste – or resources as we like to call it – is collected, recycled and then used again to make the same product it came from.
Nowadays there are a number of different recycling or recovery options available to keep our resources in the economy for as long as possible. Open-loop recycling or downcycling is one such method, where products and materials are turned into new products of lesser quality and reduced functionality.
Such open-loop recycling solutions can be the best option for many companies when it comes to diverting waste from landfill or incineration. But to achieve real longevity for our resources we need to look at tighter closed-loop solutions.
DS Smith is more than just a recycling business
At DS Smith, this is intrinsic to our operations. We’re more than just a recycling and waste management company, we are also part of the DS Smith group which is a leading manufacturer of corrugated packaging in Europe and make millions of products from the materials we gather.
The cardboard we collect is recycled and turned into new cardboard boxes in our packaging division, creating a real closed-loop solution for our customers.
Our simple business model makes us different to other waste and recycling collectors because we do not operate landfill sites – we are solely focused on recycling.
As a manufacturer of packaging it is natural for us to see waste as a raw material and as such our goal is the same as yours – to drive waste away from landfill and into more sustainable processes.
All this helps our customers achieve more in their recycling with minimal impact to the environment, while realising maximum efficiency and cost gains. And by closely collaborating with our customers we are able to develop and deploy other closed-loop management solutions for 100% of waste streams we handle.
