5 Essential data on the export of EVOO in Spain

Our commitment to the Extra Virgin Olive Oil sector is such that we want to share the export data and value a sector that generates employment and wealth.

1.- We export 98.9% of what we produce:

The Spanish olive oil sector is clearly an exporter. According to data published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, world production is 2,444,000 tonnes (data for the 2014-2015 campaign). And Spain has produced 34.4% of that amount, which is equivalent to 841,700 tonnes. The important thing about this production is that 98.9% has been dedicated to export. No less than 831,194 tonnes. We are not mistaken when we say that we are an exporting country of Olive Oil.

2.- Exports have a value of about 3,000 million euros:

In economic value, the national exports reached, in the period described, an amount of 2,725,094 million euros. In general it is a sector that generates a great activity in Spain. Mainly in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the same report already quoted from the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 70% of exports are Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and Virgin Olive Oil (EVO). That is, we export the best variety.

3.- We export in bulk:

Indeed, we have another essential data for the industry and for the food packaging sector: More than 50% of what we export from EVOO and EVO is made in bulk, that is in large quantities that are packaged in their destination, according to ASOLIVA -Asociation Spanish of the Industry and the Exporter Exports of Olive Oils and Orujo Oils.

4.- Our main destination is the EU:

The destination of our oil is mainly the European Union, and in particular Italy, Portugal and France. Outside the European Union, exports to the United States, Brazil, Japan and China stand out. It should be noted that precisely the countries that also have EVOO production like Italy and Portugal are our best customers. In particular Italy receives 40% of the total volume of our exports.

5.- The EVOO can be transported in corrugated containers:

And, how is this product transported? From DS Smith Tecnicarton we bet on a transport in corrugated cardboard, with capacity for 1.000 liters (TECNITANK®) , that offers numerous advantages to the producer and exporter: it is stackable, reason why it is possible to increase the volume of the product in each transport - truck or boat -, is easily recyclable, since it is made of corrugated cardboard; And is perfectly adapted to the demands of the transport of a food, by the inner bag made of material suitable for contact with food.
