DS Smith Denmark wins world's largest product design competition

Let's all take a moment to be proud of our company: The all-corrugated trash bin "DropBucket", invented by students and produced by DS Smith Denmark, has won the world's largest and most prestigious design award – The Red Dot.

Once again it is proven that DS Smith is so much more than just a packaging supplier – we are innovation. The Red Dot – the world's largest and most prestigious product design competition – has rewarded DS Smith with a Red Dot product design award, as well as rewarded the young DropBucket entrepreneurs with a Red Dot: Best of the Best award for the ingeniously simple and environmentally friendly trash bin solution DropBucket.

The DropBucket concept was engineered by the two DTU BA students (Technical University of Denmark) Heida Nolsøe and Marie Berggreen back in 2012, and has since been further developed, refined, and produced in thousands of issues by DS Smith Denmark. Being a corrugated trash bin the DropBucket is ideal for outdoor events like concerts and festivals as it eliminates the need for polluting plastic bins. Instead the DropBucket, which is made from a coated corrugated material that withstands both liquids as well as all kinds of weather, is simply thrown out with the trash when full, and then just replaced by a fresh DropBucket.

Right up there next to Apple

Normally the Red Dot product design awards are given to state-of-the-art consumer electronics, design furniture etc., but this year DS Smith Denmark overtook all competitors and grabbed the award. The two DropBucket inventors, Heida and Marie are only in their mid-twenties and have just recently graduated from DTU, but they are already managing their thriving DropBucket business in Denmark that currently employes 4 people. And when they enter the stage at the official Red Dot award ceremony on June 29 in Essen, Germany, they will stand side by side with one of the world's most iconic design brands and innovative thought leaders, as Apple is also receiving the Red Dot for their newly released Apple Watch.

With almost 5,000 design contributions from 56 countries, the Red Dot is not only the largest and most prestigious design award in the world; it is also the most international of its kind.
