DS Smith helps children in Nepal

DS Smith has once again organised an internal tombola supporting UNICEF at the Fulda site. The proceeds amounting €1,000 have now been transferred to the UNICEF Fulda working group in order to help children in Nepal.

"The heavy earthquake in Nepal is a terrible catastrophe. At present more than 8,600 people have died due to the consequences of the earthquake as well as the aftershock at the start of May," says Michael Lamprecht, Sales & Marketing Director at DS Smith. "Overnight millions of people have suddenly needed help, including many children. It was important to us to set an example and to motivate as many others as possible to copy us."

Anja Röhrle, Germany & Switzerland Marketing Manager at DS Smith explains: "We collected the money supporting UNICEF with an internal tombola in order to help children in need. We have around 300 employees at the Fulda site, meaning everyone donated an average of over €3 and the rest was rounded up by us."

Gudrun Petzoldt Remmert and Mechthild Morkel from the UNICEF working group in Fulda have now received the donation cheque. According to estimates by UNICEF 1.7 million children in Nepal currently need urgent help. UNICEF has already locally provided more than 220,000 people with clean drinking water, immunised 2,400 children and set up latrines for 24,000 people in emergency shelters. According to UNICEF, psycho-social aid is just as important to the children as the life-saving measures are. For many girls and boys the earthquake was a traumatic experience: they are afraid of further shocks. Therefore, UNICEF is setting up so-called child-friendly sites in the emergency shelters, which offer the children a protected, closed off area. Here they can work through their experiences in groups while playing and doing sports.

Gudrun Petzoldt-Remmert and Mechthild Morkel from the UNICEF Fulda working group were pleased to accept the donation cheque presented by Michael Lamprecht, Sales & Marketing Director, as well as Anja Röhrle, Marketing Manager, both at DS Smith, Germany & Switzerland Region in Fulda (from left to right). The money was raised through a raffle in which many employees of the company took part.
