DS Smith Develops for Tesa®'s ACXplus range

Clever and environmentally friendly ideas for optimum handling.

Packaging development before product launch

For the launch of the new product assortment from tesa®, called ACXplus, DS Smith developed a packaging with high logistical and environmental benefits. The corrugated box can be set up in no time. With reduced use of materials, it also underlines tesa®’s claim to have a particularly environmentally-friendly portfolio with the ACXplus range of adhesive tapes.

The construction of pre-glued carton developed by DS Smith for one of the leading manufacturers of technical adhesive tapes resulted in a tremendous time saver. For the new ACXplus product line from tesa®, DS Smith developed an 8-point glued pack with automatic base. The key: with a rotating movement, the box is erected and, at the same time, a core in the shape of a cross web forms from the material of the bottom flaps, serving as a holder for the adhesive rolls. The rolls can be picked faster, are better protected against slipping and damage and are easier to extract for the end-user.

Focus on quality cartons

To achieve a second construction advantage, DS Smith focused on the quality of the tesa® cartons. All pages are down by 90 degrees to the inside and glued. This results in a corrugated cardboard packaging that does not require any visible cut edges.

ACX is a technology developed by tesa® for solvent-free acrylic coating double-sided adhesive tapes. With ACXplus, tesa® opens completely new application fields. The new generation of ACXplus products introduced in 2010 is characterized by a strong adhesive force and by special weather and temperature resistance, and is therefore suitable for permanent gluing, as used in the building industry.

"We want to offer our users great benefit all along the product range, and this must be reflected in the packaging," says Mark Neugart (tesa®’s Packaging Development). "The fact that it is completely in line with our ecological requirements makes SCA Packaging’s solution perfect for us."

DS Smith Germany’s design is made with reduced resources. As packaging material, a lightweight E-wave is used, which provides sufficient stability to the pack. Compared to the usual B-wave, this means a reduced use of materials. By a clever arrangement of the blanks on the corrugated sheets during production, the proportion of waste could be significantly reduced.

"SCA Packaging’s pack can emulate the success of the ecological value of tesa®’s ACX technology," says Carolyn Wagner, Director Sales & Marketing at DS Smith Germany. "The tesa® project in particular shows that we do not leave it at the environmental benefits of corrugated packaging. The holistic view of all process steps often opens up additional opportunities. And they're put to optimal use at tesa®’s pack for ACXplus,” she adds.
