Tidy! Welsh Primary School Rewarded for Recycling Innovation

As Part of our on-going commitment to local charity Keep Wales Tidy; DS Smith Recycling recently attended and sponsored an award at their annual Tidy Wales Awards.

The Tidy Wales Awards were set up over 20 years ago and in that time, has seen all types of community projects, with people of all ages rising to every type of challenge.
The Tidy Wales Award 2012 ceremony was held on 27 February 2013 at the Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay. The ceremony was compeered by rugby legend Tom Shanklin and the awards were presented by John Griffiths, Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development.

The annual Tidy Wales Awards ceremony recognises people from every corner of Wales who, come rain or shine, make real and lasting efforts to make their local area a better place to live. Working tirelessly to restore their local environment and improve life in their communities. From picking litter and clearing paths to ambitious restoration schemes, volunteers have been busy improving the natural spaces around them. Those nominated have all gone the extra mile to keep Wales looking beautiful.

The 2012 awards were sponsored by Environment Agency Wales and co-ordinated by Keep Wales Tidy. The nine category winners were each rewarded with a cash prize of £250 with the overall winners receiving an additional £250.

DS Smith Recycling sponsored the The Recycling Innovation Award, which went to Ysgol San Sior in Llandudno who impressed judges with their wealth of waste reduction initiatives. The primary school’s Eco Club has also transformed its grounds into a natural world and members have built hedgehog and bat boxes and planted flowers to attract butterflies and bees. Ysgol Glan Sior commented “This Recycling Innovation Award sponsored by DS Smith Recycling means a lot to us. It is recognition for our school’s hard work and commitment to recycling”, we also heard from Liam a Four Year old nursery student at Ysgol San Sior, who added “My Nain says that Ysgol San Sior is brilliant because it has done so much to reduce its carbon footprint. I don’t know what a carbon footprint is but my Nain says that if everyone was as eco wise as my school, then the world will still be a beautiful place when I grow up”
