DS Smith World Cup raises money for local charities

On May 26th 2018, football teams representing DS Smith’s local packaging plant, paper mill, and recycling facilities took part in the DS Smith World Cup, raising money for local charities.

Our UK paper mill in Kemsley, one of Kent’s largest employers, hosted the World Cup tournament. DS Smith employees representing the Packaging, Paper, and Recycling Divisions, along with local contractors, laced up their boots and joined teams representing one of the nations in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, to raise funds and awareness for a number of community projects across Kent.

The charity football tournament was inspired by the football World Cup. The 24 teams included players ranging from apprentices to long-standing members of staff. The final was battled out by Sweden, represented by a team from our Recycling head office in Caerphilly, Wales, and Poland – a team of employees from our Sheerness Packaging plant.

The event raised £3,000 for local charities, including the Harrison Staines Memorial Football Tournament – an annual fixture raising money for children with cancer and leukemia – as well as the  Park Regis U8 football team and the 17th Gillingham Scouts.

Ben Jennings, Mill Manager at Kemsley, said:

We’d like to thank the tournament’s participants for donating their time to such a worthy cause. With some of the fancy footwork on display across the day, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few members of the team get a last-minute call-up from England manager Gareth Southgate!
