Millennium Stadium Case Study

Advertising hoarding used in the 2015 Rugby World Cup collected and recycled within 2 weeks of tournament finishing.

COMPANY / ORGANISATION: MILLENNIUM STADIUM

The Challenge

The Millennium Stadium – the Principality Stadium as of 2016 – was one of the hosts for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and needed its plastic advertising hoardings and signage recycled once the competition had finished.

The Solution

The advertising hoardings made with Correx® polypropylene (PP) sheets were collected and taken to the nearest DS Smith Plastics facility in Gloucester for recycling. The facility manufactures corrugated polypropylene (PP) Correx sheets used in advertising and printing industries.

The Benefits

By collecting the used signage from the Stadium, DS Smith was able to offer a closed loop recycling solution. Used signs were granulated and the recycled plastic was re-purposed back into new Correx sheets. As a result, 98% of the total weight was reclaimed and diverted from waste fields.

Mark Williams, the Principality Stadium Manager, said:

DS Smith’s help meant that we could get the advertising hoardings and signage collected and recycled in a fast and efficient way. Providing a closed-loop solution meant that many of the signs could be remade into new ones, providing a new life for the material.
