DS Smith & Tesco ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2017 AD & Biogas Awards

On 5 July 2017, DS Smith’s partnership with Tesco was awarded the Highly Commended Certificate for ‘Best Food Waste Reduction and Collection System’ at the AD & Biogas Awards.

The awards ceremony is a highlight of the UK AD & Biogas and World Biogas Expo, and is the biggest celebration of achievements and innovation in the AD and biogas industries around the world. The awards categories are designed to recognise the companies who demonstrate best practice in the sector.

DS Smith and Tesco put forward a nomination based on the National Food Backhaul project, which saw us roll out a successful model for backhauling food waste for Express and Metro stores across England and Wales. The project’s pioneer phase in Scotland previously won Retail Recycling Champion at the LetsRecycle.com Awards for Excellence in Recycling in 2016.

The rollout of the project across the whole of Great Britain has moved 24% extra food waste per annum higher up the waste hierarchy, producing enough energy through AD to power around 300 homes a year.

The ‘Best Food Waste Reduction and Collection System’ category recognises companies that are reducing food waste while also maximising the quantity and quality of food waste sent to anaerobic digestion.

James Williams, Commercial Manager at DS Smith, said:

To be Highly Commended for the National Food Backhaul project is fantastic recognition of all the hard work put into the project by our teams at DS Smith, as well as our partners in Tesco.
