UK MD Mathew Prosser speaks at CIWM Resource Cymru
On 22 March 2017, Mathew Prosser, the UK Managing Director of DS Smith Recycling, delivered a presentation at the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management’s conference Resource Cymru.
A keynote presentation by Dr Andy Rees, the Welsh Government’s Head of Waste Strategy, discussed the intended impact of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 – which has been described as “legislation for a circular economy”. One of its aims is to ensure high quality, consistently segregated collections, and that the material collected will be recycled within Wales.
Mathew spoke on the impact that incoming environmental legislation will have on DS Smith Recycling, as well as its implications for our Packaging and Paper Divisions.
The panel fielded queries from the floor on subjects as diverse as how much the industry drives change versus the effectiveness of legislation; PRNs and producer responsibility; and how we can improve on current recycling rates.
A focus on quality in collections and consistency in communication were two standout themes of the day – along with a focus on collaboration between the industry, legislators, and local authorities.
