DS Smith Charities announces aid plan for victims of Hurricane Harvey

DS Smith pledges a $25,000 donation from the DS Smith Charitable Foundation to the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. In addition, the DS Smith Charitable Foundation will match employee donations up to an additional $50,000.

[LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 4 SEPTEMBER 2017] Packaging specialist DS Smith Plc. announced today that the company will be making a direct donation of $25,000 to the American Red Cross for Relief Efforts for victims of Hurricane Harvey. In the same statement, DS Smith Plc group CEO, Miles Roberts announced that in addition, the Company will match employees donations up to an additional $50,000.

“I have been deeply moved by the devastation and suffering brought on by this unprecedented natural disaster which recently struck the Gulf Coast area of the United States. However, I have also been equally moved by the tremendous amount of grit, tenacity, and generosity of spirit exhibited by the residents of this impacted region as they react and respond to Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath,” commented Miles Roberts, CEO of DS Smith Plc, in a statement.  “As a leader of DS Smith Plc, I am announcing today that we are joining the many US companies that are responding in more than one way to help meet the basic needs of those impacted most by this devastating hurricane.

In keeping with the DS Smith Core Values of being Caring, Responsive, and Trusted, the DS Smith Charitable Foundation will make a direct donation of $25,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts.  In addition, the DS Smith Charitable Foundation will match all DS Smith employee donations made to a qualified 501(c) organization directly supporting Harvey Relief efforts up to an additional $50,000. Suggested charities include: American Red Cross; Salvation Army; Houston Food Bank; and Airlink,” concluded Mr. Roberts.

An internal DS Smith worldwide campaign to raise funds for Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts will be led by a group of employees from DS Smith North America.

“When disaster strikes, companies have a civic duty to respond,” commented Mark Smith, CEO of DS Smith, Plastics Division with headquarters in the United States.  “With close to 2,000 DS Smith employees living in the United States and a large number of customers, suppliers and family members that may have been affected, responding is the right action to take.  In this situation, with the Foundation supporting our individual efforts, we are clearly Stronger Together. We are proud that the DS Smith Charitable Foundation and our group CEO have enabled us to provide relief to those communities that have been so badly affected by Hurricane Harvey,” concluded Mr. Smith.
