Award winning packaging promotes Czech crystal around the world

Czech crystal has an incredible international reputation for brilliance, translucence and durability. Crystalex CZ, who make and export the elegant stemware to over 70 countries needed packaging that would both protect and reinforce these qualities with the consumer

Challenge

Design packaging that conveys the elegance and grace of an exceptional product to consumers at the initial in-store encounter with the necessary engineering to protect fragile crystal exported all over the world. At the same time costs needed to be kept strictly under control for product success in a competitive marketplace.

Approach

DS Smith used several different aesthetic approaches to give the packaging the look and feel it needed to highlight the product’s exceptional characteristics. The precision moulded, thin-walled glass is highlighted on the packaging with the use of the embossing techniques in combination with offset printing, and powerful partial UV varnishing. The look of the glass seems to be almost 3D. The structural design of the packaging emphasised ease of handling and minimal paper waste. The insert and the packaging itself are both part of a single die-cut, supplied as a glued flat box, which is ready to use in a single movement lasting just a moment making it an extremely cost-effective packaging solution.
