DS Smith celebrates 7 years promoting recycling

DS Smith is often associated with recycling as turn millions of tonnes of paper fibre into new packaging every year in as little as 14 days! But did you know we also play an important role in recycling steel and aluminium cans?

For the last 7 years DS Smith has been a proud partner to ‘Every Can Counts’ (Chaque Canette Compte) as the sole supplier of cardboard boxes distributed at outdoor events and gatherings to encourage people to recycle their metal containers rather than throw them away.

Each year since 2010 our facility in Contoire-Hamel Cabourg, France is approached to provide more and more of the boxes they designed for the busy summer season. The sorting kits are provided to collection associations, social groups, local authorities and more and the program now extends to more than 10 countries throughout Europe. This year Belgium will participate for the first time!

Of course the cartons, not only collect the recyclable goods, but they are also emblazoned with graphics to encourage people to really commit to recycle for everyone’s benefit. The overall results are quite striking:

• 43,000,000 million cans recycled
• 14,000 boxes and kits distributed in France
• 572 events covered
• 241 tonnes of packaging collected at the Tour de France
