DS Smith rounds up supporters of a circular economy

DS Smith is lobbying industry across the supply chain to make the most of next month’s Resource event on 4th & 6th of March 2014 in ExCel, London as part of a concerted effort to support the circular economy.

It has been estimated that a renewed focus on recovering and reusing discarded materials could boost UK GDP by £3bn, while generating 50,000 new jobs. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has also forecast that scaling this up globally could yield more than $1trillion in annual materials savings.

In a bid to promote practical measures that the entire supply chain can adopt as part of a circular economy, DS Smith has partnered with the organisers of Resource who are hosting a workshop programme comprising 12 sessions over three days.

Miles Roberts, chief executive of DS Smith, said: “There is compelling evidence that a circular economy is not only good for the environment, but also good for business.

“It’s time for us to collectively show that we can not only contribute to, but lead the movement and accelerate change. The forum of Resource will provide all stakeholders – from designers to recyclers – with pragmatic ways to shed their linear supply chain dependencies and embrace the key building blocks of a circular economy.”

DS Smith has gone through a major transformation in the last few years, enabling a much wider product and service portfolio. Bringing its packaging, paper, plastics and

recycling operations together means the market can benefit from a complete service supplier who can make a real impact on all stages of the circular economy - from design and production right through to supply and recycling.

DS Smith’s closed loop management solutions are born from a company-wide Supply Cycle Thinking strategy. Rather than focusing on supply chains, the organisation addresses the supply cycle, adopting solutions that ensures materials are used and reused as efficiently as possible – taking in the whole process and not just the sum of its parts.

Resource is the first conference and exhibition that aims to connect the whole supply chain, from designer through to recycler, to capitalise on the commercial opportunities of a circular economy and resource efficiency.

The conference at London’s ExCel Arena will run from the 4th to the 6th March and is targeting a comprehensive delegate and speaker portfolio representing all sectors of global supply cycles.
