Have you ever questioned the sustainable credentials of EPS and other expanded foams?

If so, then you are definitely not the first.

If you are like most people out there you’ll probably consider expanded foams like Polystyrene and Polypropylene as harmful, one use, non-recyclable materials that go straight to land fill.

In many people’s eyes, Expanded Polystyrene is seen as needless burden for the world’s population and the environment. However, this could not be further from the truth!

Because what you see, when you look at a piece of EPS is only the 2% of what makes up the materials appearance. The 98% of the material that you do not see is air!

How else would EPS be so lightweight?

  • EPS is 100% recyclable
  • EPS saves money, reducing cost and waste
  • EPS is incredibly resource efficient
  • EPS has a unique set of beneficial material properties
  • EPS offers flexibility for and unlimited number of applications

When recycled, what was once a fish box or packaging for your new TV, is now a park bench or fence panel.

What else qualifies EPS as a sustainable material?

  • The manufacture and use of EPS does not generate any risk to health or to the environment.
  • EPS does not damage the ozone layer since it does not use CFCs or HCFCs in the manufacturing process.
  • The transformation process consumes little energy and does not generate waste.
  • The use of EPS for thermal insulation in the construction industry contributes significant savings on heating and cooling buildings and a drastic reduction in the emission of polluting gases CO² and SO²).
  • EPS packaging protects products, helping to reduce wastage and its lightweight nature helps to reduce fuel consumption.
  • EPS packaging can come directly into contact with foodstuffs as it meets all the prevailing international health regulations.
  • Fungi and bacteria cannot easily grow on EPS.
  • EPS makes up only a tiny part of Muncipal Solid Waste (0.1%).
  • EPS holds a high calorific value. 1kg of EPS is equivalent to 1.3 litres of liquid fuel, making it an ideal material for energy recovery.
  • As it does not biodegrade EPS does not contaminate the air or water with gases or hydro soluble substances.

Life cycle analyses have shown that EPS has far less impact on the environment than other competitive materials for the same use.
